Workplace First Aid Compliance Requirements

Every employer has a responsibility to provide appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and trained first aiders based on their workplace risks and the number of workers. WJS Training helps businesses meet these workplace safety responsibilities with nationally recognised first aid and CPR training.

The Work Health and Safety (General) Regulations 2022 (WA) require businesses to have appropriate first aid arrangements in place, including suitable first aid kits, facilities and trained first aiders. The First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice also provides practical guidance on choosing the right level of first aid for your workplace, taking into account your industry, workplace hazards, team size and location.

First Aid Kits & Facilities

Workplaces should have at least one first aid kit for each workplace, with additional kits provided where the workplace is large, has multiple work areas, or risks require it.  It has to be easily accessible. The number of trained first aiders should generally be based on workplace risk levels: at least 1 first aider per 50 workers for low-risk workplaces, 1 per 25 workers for high-risk workplaces, and 1 per 10 workers for remote high-risk workplaces. Larger or higher-risk workplaces may also require dedicated first aid facilities.

Yes. All training is fully accredited and meets the latest Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. Your staff will receive valid certification for compliance. Training and assessment delivered on behalf of Allens Training Pty Ltd RTO 90909.

According to the CODE OF PRACTICE of First aid in the workplace by WorkSafe of Western Australia, the number of trained first aiders is recommended:

Low risk workplaces – one first aider for every 50 workers

High risk workplaces – one first aider for every 25 workers

Remote high risk workplaces – one first aider for every 10 workers

However, you must ensure an adequate number of workers are trained to administer first aid at the workplace or workers have access to an adequate number of other people who have been trained to administer first aid at all times. If an incident happens and coverage is not enough, penalties may apply.

So, the short answer on general guidelines:

  • Minimum one kit per workplace. If the first aid kit is not easily accessible to all workers, additional kits are needed.
  • Accessibility: Kits must be easily seen and reached by everyone.
  • Multi-Level Buildings: At least one kit per floor.
  • Mobile Workers: A kit in every vehicle (couriers, etc).
  • High-risk/specific industries will need additional kits as well as specific contents of first aid kits.

Every workplace must have first aid procedures that match the risk level, staff size, size and location of the workplace, the nature of the work being carried out at the workplace, and the nature of the hazards at the workplace.
